VATICAN ISSUES TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR DRIVERS VATICAN CITY (AP) Warning t...

VATICAN ISSUES TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR DRIVERS VATICAN CITY (AP) Warning that driving can be "an occasion of sin," the Vatican has issued ten commandments for motorists, starting with one of the originals: "Thou shalt not kill." They also warn motorists against road rage, dangerous passing and aggressive or drunken driving.

Motorists are told to help fellow drivers in case of an accident, and "guilty" drivers are urged to meet with their victims to ask forgiveness.

The Vatican document recommends prayerful devotion for drivers, such as performing the sign of the cross before starting off and saying the rosary along the way.

It calls for drivers to obey speed limits and to exercise the Christian virtues of charity to fellow drivers, prudence on the roads, hope of arriving safely and justice in the event of crashes.

PETITION SEEKS TO KEEP TEN COMMANDMENTS ON CITY PROPERTY Fargo, N.D. (AP) A petition drive seeks to block plans to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the City Hall mall in Fargo, North Dakota, where it has stood for nearly 50 years.

City Commissioners voted three-to-two Monday to donate the monument to a private group.

They also rejected an offer from the Red River Freethinkers to put a monument near the Ten Commandments that would have stated, "The government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion." The petition being circulated would add a section to city law saying, "The Ten Commandments monument on the lawn of Fargo City Hall shall remain where it has stood since its original installation and shall not be removed." It would require almost three-thousand valid signatures to bring the issue before the city commission or Fargo voters.

THIEVES STRIP COPPER GUTTERS OFF INDIANA CATHEDRAL FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) Thousands of dollars worth of copper gutters have been stripped off a Roman Catholic church in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Priests at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception called police Monday to report the theft.

One priest told officers he woke up before dawn when he heard noises, but thought it was animals outside and went back to sleep.

Another priest told officers he looked out his window and saw three men pulling the gutters off the back of the main church building.

He says they fled when he banged on the window and waved his arms.

Fort Wayne Police have alerted scrap metal buyers to watch for anyone trying to sell large amounts of ornate, copper gutters.

BLACK CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE CO-HOSTS 'THE VIEW' NEW YORK (AP) The seat on "The View" formerly occupied by Rosie O'Donnell has been filled for one day at least by a black Christian conservative.

Star Parker told her co-hosts on the Barwall A-B-C talk show that after her fourth abortion, she sensed that, in her words, "there has to be something wrong with killing your offspring." She said Christian business associates convinced her to attend their church, where she heard the Gospel and found peace when she trusted Jesus Christ.

That prompted Barbara Walters to ask what it means to be born again. Parker responded, "You say, 'Lord come into my heart and just live with me and guide me every day."' Star Parker also said she doesn't believe in gay marriage or evolution.

EpiscopalIANS URGED TO SEEK COMMON GROUND SALINA, Kan. (AP) Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori (SHOHR'-ee) says the troubled denomination can survive despite turmoil over accepting gay clergy and relationships.

Jefferts Schori told church members in Kansas that disagreements are a part of life, but shouldn't be allowed to overshadow the things that Episcopalians have in common.

Asked about the controversy over evolution versus creationism, the Episcopal leader said she accepts both as true, but in different ways.

Jefferts Schori said she views "evolution as the very best of scientific theory," while the Genesis story explains humankind's relationship to God and the world.

MALAYSIA URGED TO LET MUSLIMS CHANGE RELIGIONS KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) Leaders of Malaysia's minority religions, fearing creeping Islamization, are urging the government to let people choose their faith.

The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism is protesting recent court decisions that effectively force Malaysians born Muslim to stay Muslim.

Last month, a woman who was born to Muslim parents failed to get Malaysia's highest civil court to recognize her conversion to Christianity. She was told that would be up to an Islamic court.

Another woman born to Muslim parents was detained earlier this year when she went to an Islamic court seeking to change her religion from Islam to Hinduism. She was sent for religious counseling to a rehabilitation center, where she remains. Muslim authorities also seized her 15-month-old daughter from her Hindu husband.

PAKISTANI OFFICIAL: OUTRAGE OVER RUSHDIE KNIGHTHOOD NO SURPRISE Washington (AP) Pakistan's foreign minister says Britain should not be surprised by the violent reaction in the Muslim world to the knighthood awarded to writer Salman Rushdie.

Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri, in Washington to meet with top administration officials and lawmakers, said Muslims are angry at the honor given to a writer who many accuse of blasphemy.

His comments came as Pakistanis burned effigies of Rushdie and Britain's Queen Elizabeth, and a Cabinet minister said the knighthood could justify suicide bombings.

Iran's late spiritual leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a 1989 religious edict ordering Muslims to kill Rushdie because his book "The Satanic Verses" allegedly insulted Islam.

MUSLIMS MAD AT INDIAN CANDIDATE WHO SAID WOMEN SHOULD STOP WEARING VEILS LUCKNOW, India (AP) Islamic leaders are demanding that India's ruling coalition withdraw its presidential candidate after she said Muslim women should stop wearing their headscarves.

Muslim leaders accuse Pratibha Patil, a Hindu, of insulting Islam by suggesting the veil is primitive. Addressing a conference over the weekend, Patil said women started wearing headscarves in India to save themselves from 16th century Muslim invaders, and that it's time to drop the practice.

Indian lawmakers choose the president, and the ruling coalition has enough votes to elect her.

A member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said it was God who had asked women to wear a headscarf and that this was enshrined in the Quran, the Muslim holy book.
