Professor: lab in the U.S. is desirable

YANKTON, S.D. (AP) A university professor says it will be nice to have a deep underground science laboratory in the United States.

The National Science Foundation wants to do just that by turning the abandoned Homestake mine into a lab.

University of Minnesota professor Marvin Marshak says there are labs elsewhere in the world where experiments can be done deep underground. But he says it's hard to send students off to other countries and keep track of them and their work.

Marshak is a professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department at the University of Minnesota.
