BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) A committee at Brookings says a bypass around the city would be the best way to handle increased traffic if the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad starts hauling coal out of Wyoming.

The city council formed the Railroad Safety Committee in January.

The D-M-and-E wants to expand into Wyoming and then haul coal east through South Dakota and Minnesota. It's current route is through Brookings.

Eight of the nine committee members supported a bypass. The one who didn't says a bypass would only shift the problem of increased traffic outside the city.
