Wheat prices up, but offset by production costsAug 18 2007 9:24AM
Associated Press Spring wheat brought $5.60 a bushel last week in Aberdeen and winter wheat was at $5.58. Both prices were about 27 percent higher than last year. SDSU Extension Educator Gary Erickson says the higher prices sound good, but they're countered by higher costs of production. Erickson says there's not much left for profit when considering increased costs of fuel, seed, fertilizer and chemicals. Wheat yields in the area vary drastically from field to field. They range from 30 bushels per acre to as much as 60 bushels an acre. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 08-18-07 0918CDT |
