World War II sub recovered; links to North DakotaSep 5 2007 1:54PM
Associated Press An extensive, deep sea search has found a Navy submarine that sank off the Aleutian islands. North Dakotan Sidney Loe (LOW), who was from the town of Sanish, was among the 70 crew members who went down with the U-S-S Grunion in 1942, after an encounter with Japanese warships. His nephew, Mike Loe of Manvel, says the family had been notified of the search. He says the wreck was discovered August 23rd, submerged a mile below the Bering Sea. Mike Loe says finding the sub gives his family some peace. He says his father, Amber Loe, Sidney's brother, was told of the sub's discovery just a few days before he died last Monday, at the age of 84. Bruce Aberle (AY'-ber-lee) of Newton, Massachusetts, along with his two brothers, financed the intensive search for the Grunion. His father was the sub's skipper. Aberle says it could take months to analyze video and photos of the wreckage to find out what sent the sub to the bottom: Relatives of Sidney Loe have placed a marker in the Sanish Riverview Cemetery near New Town, in his memory.
