Company apologizes for incident involving illegal immigrant suspects

Fargo, N.D. (AP) A roofing company has issued an apology after suspected illegal immigrants were found at one of its Fargo work sites.

Indianapolis-based CMR Construction and Roofing says it rigorously follows federal and state requirements when hiring new employees or subcontractors.

It says the problem is that there is no accurate way to verify the validity of some identification documents.

State officials say they found seven suspected illegal immigrants at a CMR site. A total of 31 men suspected of being in the country illegally were turned over to the Border Patrol last week during two days of contractor compliance checks involving roofers in Fargo.

Hundreds of Fargo-area homes are in need of roof work because of a September hail storm.

Posted by Ben on Nov 13 2007 11:32AM - It is high time companies were punished for hiring illegal alien criminals. They drive down the wages of americans, and steal social security numbers, to steal american jobs. This company could have used the E-Verify system to check the legality of all it's employees. So their argument that it's impossible to check immigration status is a lie. They should lose their business license permanently!

Posted by ibebarbie on Nov 14 2007 3:53PM - I believe this employer is very disingenuous when he states "the problem is that there is no accurate way to verify the validity of some identification documents" As Ben pointed out E-Verify is available and it's free to employers!!!! Throw the CEO in jail and fine them heavily then have the IRS come in and do an audit. The citizens of this country are tired of paying for your cheap labor!!!!
