Snow sets more records in Grand Forks, Fargo

(Help from Doug Barrett, KNOX) Grand Forks, N.D. (AP) More snowfall records in eastern North Dakota.

The National Weather Service says the Grand Forks airport had 8.1 inches of snow yesterday, setting a record for the date. And Fargo set a record with 5.9 inches.

The previous mark in both cities was set back in 1926.

Grand Forks and Fargo also had record snowfall last Saturday.

Today's forecast calls for a chance of light snow in the west and flurries in central North Dakota, and a little snow overnight in the east. The southwest could get some freezing rain tonight.

Further down the road the National Weather Service says southern North Dakota could get up to two inches of snow on Saturday. And colder weather is moving in, with low temperatures on Saturday dropping to the teens below zero in some regions.

It is true that the average global temperature seems to have risen in the past decades, but it is almost at the margin of error. That said, those same measurements seem to show that the average temp is now decreasing. Before you call someone a moron, check the science.

Global warming doesn't mean a universal rise in temperatures evenly across the globe - that has never happened on this planet and no one is saying that will occur now. Rather, a rising overal temperature will result in wild temperature swings, previously unseen weather phenomina, and gradual changes over time that will ultimately change whole climates. No one can argue the polar ice caps and glaciers everywhere on earth are melting. By the time you smart ass right wingers are convinced it will be far too late. Laugh while you can I guess, but the last laugh's on you.

Posted by Solar & Geothermic on Dec 5 2007 3:12PM - All ~ When you're talking "cycles", don't forget to consider not only the well documented 11 yr solar cycles (ask any HAM radio operator) But look into geothermal cycles. The magma within our Earth's core moves with relation to the surface. With the newer Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) systems, this data can be monitored and it's showing where we have thermal cycles based on migrating hot spots within the Earth. Combine the Solar and the Geothermic variations ~ and you get lots of thermal cycles across the planet, ones that have been going on since the formation of the planet. Should we keep our planet as clean as possible? Certainly! Should we NOT pollute where we are economically able to? Yes!

Should we deplete our economic resources, throw our financial systems into disarray, and embark into a systematic transfer of wealth from those who "have" to those who "have not"?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Posted by Common Scents on Dec 5 2007 4:16PM - superdem Please look at the data the last 100 years and the data throughout history. The warmest period the last 100 years was the 1930's, even though the biggest increase in industrialism was yet to come during WW2. There were no SUV's and the evil capitalists were fighting tremendous heat and drought during those years. Historically, ealier in the first millenium, the earth heated up considerably. Greenland was warm enough to sustain crops and yes grapes during those times. IT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED! A few hundred years later the Northern Europeans had to move from Greenland because of a rapid cooling. The earth's weather is dependant on several factors and none are "man made". The "Weather Control" people (by the way the last great weather control machine was developed by Simon Barsinister of Underdog fame), are bigger saps than the Population Explosion People and The Ice Age People.

We both share a healthy skepticism about global warming. This global warming (in place of those two words insert another two, 'more taxes') phenomenon has gained a foothold here in Australia now that the newly elected Government has been elected and the first (symbolic) thing that they did was to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Because of that, the loony left has been crawling out from under their logs (Oh! Sorry they're not allowed to have logs any more, something to do with the carbon in them)
One story that has popped up is this one and I'll enclose the link for you all to read of an Australian news clip of an American report.

Nice try but if you employ correct modeling scales I have a feeling that you wouldn't change the garage temp at all.

It could be something on the order of a small diecast car turning over in a room the size of skyscraper...no effect...at all.

There is global warming however such is the result of larger elements such as the Sun. If you check all the planets of late you would see similar increases in temp across them all.

30 years ago it was global cooling...

Posted by Paul Tully on Dec 5 2007 6:05PM - Superdem,"No one can argue the polar ice caps and glaciers everywhere on earth are melting"... factually wrong.

Although the glaciers in the arctic are in fact melting at the southern edges. Antartica is not melting at all.

Explaination: If you pile snow up in the middle of an floating iceberg it will get bigger and as the big iceberg gets larger, the edges approching the warmer air. These edges will then melt away. Otherwise the whole world would be ice! You do know that the artic has no land under it right?

The other ice cap, that would be the one to the south, is on land. It is getting bigger and colder, not smaller. Check your facts.

Posted by Alex on Dec 5 2007 6:05PM - Hey Superdem, check the stats on the glacier on Mt. Rainier. It's depth has INCREASED 13 feet since the 1930's.

And who, exactly, said we are even suppose to have ice at the poles?

Posted by Scott on Dec 5 2007 6:17PM - Here's a tip for you: the first step to even debating about global climate change is realizing the difference between climate and weather. Buenos Aires recorded this Thursday (November 15th) the lowest November temperature in 90 years. Temperature in the Downtown weather station reached 2.5C. Since records began more than a century ago, only two days had colder lows in November. It was in 1914 (1.6) and 1917 (2.4). And ninety years ago the urban heat island effect was much less pronounced than nowadays. In Brazil's southernmost province Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil temperatures fell to 2.3C. In Sao Joaquim Monday's (Nov., 12) the temperature was -1.2 C with frost. Reason McLucus 16 Nov 07

Posted by Independent on Dec 5 2007 8:52PM - Actually global warming is only a currant fad among weather gurus. Remember the ice age fad some years back. Science Fads goes in cycles like the weather does only in all fields of science.

Common sense is not a prerequisite for a science degree.

Mars is truely warming up as is Venus. Jupiter is doing something but it has'nt been decided what yet.
This fact has been known for sometime and how strange it keeps being overlooked and under reported.

Actually South America has had 4 very cold winters, this one being the worse.

The central part of the Antartic is getting colder as is iceland.

I'm neither on the left or the right. I think for myself which includes deciding if i want to use spell check or not.

"Climates are changing because our Earth is warming, according to the research of scientists. Does this contribute to a warm summer day? It may, however global climate change is actually much more complicated than that because a change in the temperature can cause changes in other weather elements such as clouds or precipitation."

and we are talking about snowfall which is precipitation.

Just my 2 cents...

In August of 1936 Seymour, Texas had a high of 120 degrees. Part of Texas had a drouth and hot weather that created the great dust bowl of the 30s.
Our weather extreems come in cycles of several decades. Cold weather will come again if we live long enough to see it.

I take quick showers and use natural housecleaning products. I pay all my bills online and no longer receive paper statements. I try to walk as much as possible and am currently in the process of purchasing my first hybrid car. My christmas presents this year to others will be wrapped in old magazines and newspapers.
These are a few things I do to help offset my carbon footprint. I am no where close to doing enough but I am slowly getting better at it.
For those of you that don't do anything to conserve I am fine with that. You live your life and I will happily live mine.

So Lena_HasDaShovel what do you do to help the cause of global warming?

Posted by michifnd on Dec 6 2007 7:20PM - da bomb no need to be rude. Im quite aware as most posters are that Global warming claims also state that any weather extreme is caused by Global warming. What maney of us are saying is that we have lived through weather trends such as those happening today. I think most people agree we need to change over to cleaner energy use. Our power grids need a major overhaul, we need to help developing Nations, pressure those Countries like China that needs to put some of there Goverments huge profits back into there factories to lower emissions, supply cleaner ways for there poor to heat so on. If in fact Global warming is real the US is not high on the list of contributeing to it. da bomb do you even know how the electricity in your area is produced? coal? if so then what is your State doing to burn cleaner?, Global warming seams to be Global Anger, calling others stupid. Iv heard no solutions from any of the rude posters here. If indivisuals themselves took measures at home the impact could be huge. After all somebody is buying all the goods that are produced, shipped and then end up in land fills. Being more efficient is a goal most try to achieve, its the loudmouths calling names that I notice to be clueless and use the most products that add to this so called Global Warming. I never get a responce from a Attack Lib who takes a bus, buys locally produced goods, conserves on heat or electric. (Lena Has DaShovel)

Posted by Ernie on Dec 7 2007 12:17AM - All we heard during hurricane Katrina was how bad global warming was and how it’s going to get worse. The next two years, .............. nothing?? Mmmmmmm, maybe we’re not supposed to use common sense on this topic. And I wonder what melted the ice age. Caveman SUV’s?

Posted by Bob in ND on Dec 7 2007 12:57AM - The Global warming thing is a lie! There is no science to prove it. Your SUV will not ruin the world, nor will man. It will be God that ends the world as we know it. Dr. Michael S. Coffman Ph.D in a movie called, World events and prophecy, states "Global warming is not true"! Why does the UN feel 4 out of 5 people of the world, need to die to save the world from Global warming! With a world population cap of 500 million. That is the same number as the Illuminati, isn't that strange! When these nut jobs state you need to die, to "Save the World" will you be standing in line! Stop worshiping the creation, and worship the creator. As for North Dakota being a death trap, what will your state be like with food riots? 40 below keeps the riff-raff out!

Posted by Ashley on Dec 7 2007 2:38PM - I don't really wish to dignify the responses of those who have taken a single day's weather in one location and used it as "proof" that global warming isn't occurring. BUTI feel it salient to point out that global warming would come with increased average global precipitation. Simply put, warmer air holds more water. Thus, more rain/snow. The weather in Fargo on Tuesday wasn't 40 belowin fact, the high was a relatively balmy 21 degrees.

Posted by Independant on Dec 7 2007 8:04PM - American, please don't put American down as a user name when making enept statements such as comparing the falling of a feather and bowling ball and the frequences of light.
The world already thinks the worst of us. Don't make it worse.

Because of earths atmosphere the air will prevent the feather from falling at the same rate as the bowling ball. Not gravity. On the moon they would fall at the same rate of speed.Look it up. Visable and invisable light travel at the same speed. Off the top of my head, i beleive its around 186,000 miles per second. you can look that up too It'll be good for you.

Thanks for the info about Mt. Ranier glacier Alex. Mario,i read abt the British cows too. No comment. Thanks for the Austrailian link Tony

Lena_Has The Shovel, you seem to be a very smart lady and comman sense too. Thinking that of course makes me completely agree with you.

I'd love to visit ND and it,s sturdy
people and i know i'd love to have you as neighbors.

If the leftist and rightists could come together and agree to disagree and work together to make us a good country. Think what a powerful force we could be.
Have a Great Day!!!!

Posted by wayupnorth on Dec 10 2007 11:02AM - I am moving back to ND in February...call me crazy but, GRAND FORKS HERE I COME!!!!

Posted by American on Dec 11 2007 7:17AM - Hmm... Independent, you make a number of good points, but I'd prefer to have someone quote me a bible verse before I make a decision one way or the other.

Posted by Æric on Dec 11 2007 2:06PM - Man, only in a backwards state like ND can a snowstorm spark controversy. Bob in ND even brought the God card out to play by saying loosely quoted:

"Me watch movie Dr. wrote, me blindly worship dictator god and god chosen republicans, me reference blindly, me not know what rest of world is."

The United States is not gods chosen country. Your attitudes are so self involved that is weird to think you're worshipping a creator.

Things aren't the way they're supposed to be when a snowstorm dumps 8 inches, then the next day its raining, 60 degrees and causing a major flood. Thats not Alla... God, thats us.

If you chose to reply, don't forget to bring out that proverbial six year old in you. It makes for good reading while you contradict yourself.

Posted by sad on Dec 12 2007 10:44PM - Republican conservative logic at it's finest!

“We don’t know if global warming is a threat, so let’s not do anything”

“We don’t know if Iran has nuclear weapons, so let’s nuke them”

Priceless.

Posted by Laughing on Jan 30 2008 8:04AM - Wow, I guess when you live in ND the winters get pretty boring. Sounds like you guys have been hold up too long in your houses due to all the snow and cold. Don't worry! Summer is on the way. You will all be free soon!

Posted by Allen on Mar 16 2008 12:40PM - What IGNORANCE!!!!!! The people who claim global warming is a hoax, are the very people dooming the inhabitants of Earth. Why did Russia plant it's flag at the north pole? Oil fields will become available once ALL THE ICE MELTS! Countries are claiming territory in the arctic in order to have access to new shipping lanes that will become available after ALL THE ICE MELTS! The real hoax is that global warming is a hoax.
