Senate passes government information billFeb 26 2008 5:17PM
Associated Press By CHET BROKAW Associated Press Writer PIERRE, S.D. (AP) The South Dakota Legislature has given final approval to a bill aimed at giving taxpayers more information about state government spending. A Senate committee had rejected the measure, but the full Senate decided to debate the bill. Senators voted 20-14 to pass the measure, which will become law if Gov. Mike Rounds signs it. HB1233 would require state government to set up a Web site that would provide information on state salaries, state contracts and spending in various programs. Supporters say it will give taxpayers information they need to understand what state government is doing. Opponents say the state cannot afford to spend $700,000 setting up the Internet site.
