Eye on Health - Reconstructive SurgeryApr 21 2008 11:01AM
KXMCTV Minot Thought to be disabled. Basically removed from society. Greg Liebl's life changed years ago when an gun accident basically wiped away his face. As you will see the incident caused great cosmetic harm but has not hurt his desire to fight back. In tonight's Eye on Health, Perry Olson introduces us to Greg, and the Minot doctor who has started a two year process to rebuild his face. (Perry Olson - KX News) Dr. Juan Ulloa knows it will not be easy, for him, or his patient...his collegues have assured him of that. (Dr. Juan Ulloa - Trinity Health) "It is very difficult and even when I sent pictures to my professor, he said it was a big case." But last week, the doctor started the process of rebuilding the face of this man...Greg Liebl. "He litteraly lost all the bone on his face. He has no nose and the bones that were on face are gone completely." Liebl has tried this before trying to reconstruct his face. (Greg Liebl) "I've been through surgery before, but this one is a big step." That was five years ago, and it failed...making the case even harder now. (Dr. Ulloa) "It is going to require lots of materials and I just want him to be normal and have a normal life." Making it tougher the financial aspect. Liebl has no insurance...but Dr. Ulloa took the case anyway, securing donations from medical companies across the country and now raising money to cover other costs. (Dr. Ulloa) "I took the challenge because to hear from him what he is going through is touching. He can't find a job and people call him a monster." (Greg) "Going through life the way I am right now is no life, and it is all going to change." Five or six surgeries over the next two years could change Liebl's outlook on life and how society views him as well. Dr. Ulloa says it won't be easy...but he is confident. (Dr. Ulloa) "We are dealing with something that doesn't exist. No bone, no structure. I will do my best to recover his normal or at least something that was there at one time."
