Defying president, Senate extends farm bill for one week...

Defying president, Senate extends Farm Bill for one week Washington (AP) The Senate has defied President Bush by passing a one-week extension of current farm law while trying to come up with new legislation.

Bush wants Congress to extend the law for a year or longer.

But Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin says farm-state lawmakers are "very close" to a deal on a new bill The Iowa Democrat originally asked for a two-week extension. GOP Senator Larry Craig of Idaho objected, saying lawmakers have taken too long to write the legislation.

The House is expected to pass the extension before the current law expires tomorrow.

It's the fifth extension since the law originally expired in September.

Bush says the proposed legislation would not do enough to cut subsidy payments to wealthy farmers.
