Hog farm protesters make first court appearanceApr 30 2008 8:04AM
Associated Press LAKE ANDES, S.D. (AP) About 25 people arrested last week for blocking traffic to a hog farm construction site near Wagner made their first court appearances in Charles Mix County court. Two lawyers entered not guilty pleas Tuesday on behalf of the protesters charged with disorderly conduct and public nuisance. A magistrate judge told the defendants that the state's attorney is not seeking jail time so they're not be entitled to a jury trial. Bond for each person was set at $500 each, which was posted by the tribe. Yankton Sioux Tribe members are trying to block development of the Long View Farm of Hull, Iowa, and three tribal members have filed a civil lawsuit in federal court asking a judge to stop it.
