American Indian group traverses the nation

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) An American Indian group is walking across the country to draw attention to the environment and other native issues.

The Longest Walk 2 started in San Francisco on February 11th and will end in Washington D.C. on July 11th.

Walkers are commemorating the Longest Walk of 1978. That 3,600-mile effort gathered support to halt proposed legislation challenging Indian treaties with the U.S. government.

This time, the walk is focused on reclaiming the earth.

Tuesday, a motley group of American Indian, black, Asian and Latino walkers trailed up Route 1 outside Richmond, Virginia, picking up litter along the way.

They marched behind a banner reading "All life is sacred, save Mother Earth." (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 07-02-08 0819CDT | save this article / add to your favorites list
