No troop cuts?...McCain's ready..."A vicious lie"

Washington (AP) The Associated Press has learned that President Bush's top defense advisers have recommended that he not pull any more combat troops out of Iraq before the end of the year.

Some had expected that the improved security in Iraq would allow for quicker cuts. The White House says only that Bush has received the recommendations and is considering his options.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) It's John McCain's night in St. Paul, Minnesota, tonight. He'll accept the nomination for president at the Republican National Convention. He's already made a brief visit to the Xcel center to check out the podium. It's been remade to create more of the town hall style that's become McCain's trademark.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) John McCain's campaign is calling a tabloid report that his running mate, sarah palin, had an extramarital affair "a vicious lie." A senior adviser says the campaign is considering legal action against the National Enquirer.

NEW YORK (AP) A disappointing retail sales report is just one piece of the bad economic news that sent stocks plunging today. The Dow lost more than 340 points, while the broader indexes also lost about 3 percent of their value. That's leaving investors nervous about the release tomorrow of the government's August employment report.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) Officials and residents along the Southeast coast are getting ready for Tropical Storm Hanna.

Forecasters say the storm could gain hurricane strength before it hits. Watches or warnings have been issued from Georgia to New Jersey. Rain and high winds could arrive as early as tomorrow night.
