Associated Press ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Just ahead of John McCain's acceptance speech, running mate sarah palin has been nominated by acclamation. Meanwhile, Palin has been on the attack again today, accusing supporters of the Democratic ticket of spreading vicious lies about her, her family and John McCain. ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) In his speech tonight, John McCain will vow to get rid of of what he calls the "constant partisan rancor" plaguing the country. And according to excerpts that have been released, McCain says he was never the same again after being held as a POW in Vietnam. He says he wasn't his own man anymore, but rather his country's. Washington (AP) Once powerful lobbyist Jack Abramoff has been sentenced to four years in prison for trading expensive gifts for political favors. Abramoff fought back tears as he declared himself a broken man. He told the judge he's not the same man who "happily and arrogantly engaged in a lifestyle of political and business corruption." WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) The governors of Virginia and North Carolina have declared emergencies and officials are urging some residents to head inland as Tropical Storm Hanna heads toward the Atlantic coast. It could create a soggy swath from South Carolina to Maine. Meanwhile, disaster officials are keeping an eye on Category 4 Hurricane Ike, strengthening in the Atlantic. WASHINGTON (AP) Military sources say that President Bush's top defense advisers have recommended he maintain 15 combat brigades in Iraq until the end of the year.
