Senators balk at auto bailout...Search for fire victims...Iraq deal...Nov 16 2008 11:54AM
Associated Press Washington (AP) A couple of Republican senators may be letting the air out of a Democratic plan to bail out the auto industry. Richard Shelby and Jon Kyl told the Sunday interview programs that spending $25 billion of the financial industry bailout to help U.S. automakers would just put off their inevitable demise. But Democrat Carl Levin of Michigan say the companies are trying to adapt to the marketplace they just need immediate help to survive. BREA, Calif. (AP) With more than 34 square miles now burned, firefighters are hoping to take advantage of calmer winds today to try to rein-in the wildfires raging in parts of Southern California. No deaths are reported, but police are searching the rubble of a mobile home park where about 500 homes were destroyed. JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) A tsunami warning has been issued in Indonesia. A local geological agency says the country's been hit by a 7.7 magnitude quake. BAGHDAD (AP) A security agreement that lets U.S. forces stay in Iraq for another three years, but then requires them to leave, has won the approval of Iraq's cabinet. A stamp of approval from parliament is considered likely. The final draft is designed to meet Iraq's concerns over both its sovereignty and its security needs. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) Rudy Giuliani might make another bid for the presidency or perhaps for governor of New York. The former front-runner for the GOP nomination, who dropped out after losing in Florida in January, says he's not shutting the door to another run. After a speech in Dubai today, he also sidestepped a question about whether he'd serve in the Obama administration. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
