No bailout?...Rivalry aside...Cuban disputes charges...Nov 17 2008 3:11PM
Associated Press Washington (AP) It looks like Detroit's Big Three might not be getting a bailout from Washington by the end of the year after all. Democrats in the Senate are moving ahead with a plan to use part of the $700 billion Wall Street bailout to pay for the loans. But aides in both parties and lobbyists following the plan say the votes aren't there. The White House and congressional Republicans want the money to come from a loan program already approved by Congress. CHICAGO (AP) It was just a couple of weeks ago that they were waging a fight for the White House a fight that sometimes turned bitter. But today, Barack Obama and John McCain were sitting down together in Chicago, talking about ways to work together. In a statement afterward, they said they had talked about "the need to launch a new era of reform" to challenge government waste and partisanship in Washington. BAGHDAD (AP) A security pact between Baghdad and Washington has been read to the Iraqi parliament the first stage of an approval process leading up to a vote a week from today. If it's approved, it goes to Iraq's president and his two deputies for ratification. It allows U.S. forces to remain in Iraq through 2011, but calls for them to leave Iraq's cities by June 30th. LOS ANGELES (AP) Actor Christopher Lloyd says he'd been putting off the task of organizing and storing memorabilia that he had kept at his home near Santa Barbara, California. Now, he says, he doesn't have to worry about that. The home was among dozens lost to the fires that swept through Montecito last week. He tells ABC he won't rebuild the $11 million home. WASHINGTON (AP) Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says the government's allegations against him are false. Federal regulators today accused him of insider trading. They say he used confidential information on a stock sale to avoid more than $750,000 in losses. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 11-17-08 1455CST |
