Eye on Health - Diabetes FamilyDec 1 2008 1:11AM
KXMCTV Minot Only five percent of diabetics have Type One but one family in Minot has two children who have exactly that...and they handle it like adults. Perry Olson has more. Meet the Kramer family. That is dad Jesse and mom, Brekka. And here are there kids Haley and Emma. Mom and dad smile quite a bit talking about them... (DAD) "I am very proud of these two. They have done things that there was no way I could have done at their age." (Brekka) "Sometimes you step back and realize what they are doing everyday...and it is pretty amazing." What they have done is handle Type One Diabetes. (Brekka) "One is your pancreas doesn't work. You are insulin dependent. Type two can manage with diet and exercise." That means the two who were both diagnosed at age seven are constantly doing this checking blood sugar levels...and paying close attention to how they feel... (DAD) "They have really learned how to read their bodies if they are feeling dizzy or off they come and test on their own and let us know. (Emma) "I just kind of feel dizzy and I just kinda feel a bit tired and stuff..." Hailey having dealt with it a bit longer than her sister has a good grasp of the situation... (DAD) "Hailey can go out to eat with family friends now and she can manage her diabetes right now. She counts carbs and realizes her levels and knows everything she has to do with that pump." The pump is how she gets insulin...24-7. (Hailey) "The pump is basically a mechanical pancreus. Here is vial of insulin and there is a plunger that pumps it out. You have to check levels before you eat too and if you feel dizzy or anything." (Hailey) "I have kind of worked it into my daily life so I am used to it now." Despite the diagnosis...the two are your normal very active kids. Emma is busy with Dance and tae kwon do...Hailey with Volleyball and Basketball...and..."but they still fight like regular siblings!" Keeping their parents good and busy! With your Eye on Health, Perry Olson, KX News.
