Berthold Band Set To Play CapitolJan 5 2009 7:09PM
KXMCTV Minot Debbie Kuehn tells us why... Here are some people who are pretty up-beat about Governor Hoeven's upcoming State of the State Address. Not because they're excited about what the Governor has to say... but because they're getting a chance to toot their own horns during that ceremony. These members of the Berthold High School band found out shortly before Christmas vacation that they had been selected as the Governor's Band... Lynn Mollerud/ Berthold Sr.- "We thought we were all in trouble because our teacher wasn't in school that day. So when she came back, she walked into the room and said, 'Do you know why we're here?" And we kind of looked at her. And she goes, "We're the Governor's Band!" And we all got excited and cheered." No, Dawna Helfrich wasn't mad... but the news did meet with some dischord. It was right before the Christmas break and the performance would fall on the second day back after vacation... Whitney Hansen/ Berthold Sr.-"Um, practicing... a lot well, today we have two bands so that's more practice." Dawna Helfrich/ Berthold High School-" They get along so well. I mean we really don't any conflicts in this room. at all. And so you're right, it's hard to get them to settle down a little bit, cause they love to chat with each other. They just really area a fine group of musicians and friends." Dawna believes the key to this group;s success centers around the way they work together. (ns directing) She says there always seems to be a great deal of hamony between then. Dawna-"I had to laugh a little bit because tomorrow night we were supposed to have a boys Basketball game but iti got moved because of the State of the State and us playing at it. So I said jokingly to my princicpal that I think that's the first time basketball's been moved for music." student(s)? Being named the Governor's Band is undoubtedly a great honor... and it's fun... but it's a great way to drum up some recognition... Dawna- nice do it for music... for a group accustomed to sitting on the sidelines. In Berthold, Debbie Kuehn KX News. Dawna Helfrich has been directing the band in Berthold for 15 years. This is the first year they tried out for the honor. CAM 1 - 2Shot / Break / Sports
