Democrats Think You’re Too Stupid To Figure Out Which Cars To Drive

The Dems’ big push on gas prices is being spearheaded by this “Americans deserve more efficient vehicles” nonsense:

Democrats: Motorists deserve more fuel efficient cars

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A Democratic senator said a new energy plan backed by both Democrats and Republicans is sorely needed in the United States, where motorists face a summer of dramatic hikes in gas prices

“All it takes is one trip to the gas station to know Americans face an energy crisis,” said Maria Cantwell of Washington state in the weekly Democratic radio address.

You know what the problem with this is?  When given a choice, Americans are overwhelmingly choosing the luxury and convenience of less fuel efficient vehicles over the fuel savings of more efficient vehicles like hybrids.  And as for America being in a fuel crisis?  It’s not much of a crisis when Americans are actually driving more during these times of high gas prices rather than less

So what’s with the Democrats using their own conjured up “fuel crisis” as an excuse to tell us what cars we can drive?  It’s all about control, as liberals love to put the government in charge of as much of our lives as possible, and pandering to the environmentalist base

Ultimately, our energy situation would be helped a great deal more by the government being less involved in energy than more.  But that won’t stop people like Senator Cantwell from essentially arguing to nationalize the energy industry (something Hillary Clinton has talked about as well):

Cantwell, who decried American dependence on foreign oil, supports a more centralized energy plan that would reduce the cost of fuel. Such a plan, she believes, would preserve thousands of U.S. jobs and support small businesses hurt by rising fuel costs.

Reducing the cost of energy through central control of the energy industry.  Sounds decidedly...Marxist

Clearly, unfortunately, the Dems are right in this case. Americans ARE too stupid to figure out which cars to drive. Thanks for supporting this point with your article.

Posted by pianoguy on Jun 17 2007 5:29PM - The original blog post was a classic case of cherry-picking. Hybrid car sales are at an all-time high, and the Accord was a crummy hybrid to begin with, designed for performance instead of fuel economy.

Democrats or not, Americans are increasingly turning to hybrids to help deal with higher gas prices. Hybrids accounted for 3.4 percent of all vehicles sold last month. That doesn't sound like a lot, but just two years ago, J.D. Power was predicting that hybrid sales wouldn't reach 3 percent until 2010: http://www.soultek.com/blog/2005/02/jd-power-hybrid-vehicle-market-study.html

Therefore the only thing left to us is conservation & efficiency in the short term. Our political leaders must lead us in this direction. This will not only help with transportation fuels, it will help Global Warming.

PS. Quit the name calling here - we need to get real about transportation fuels - we need to cut back and if the American consumer is unable then we need our leader to step up. Heck knows, its been 7 years since we have had any.

Posted by codeSuidae on Jun 18 2007 11:08AM - If you think that Americans should have the freedom to choose gas guzzling vehicles in the same way that Easter Islanders had the freedom to cut down their trees.

If you think this is silly, please search Google Video for the full-length 'End of Suburbia' and watch the entire video. It's free, it's informative, and if you don't agree with it, at least you'll have more material to make fun of.

One thing this new eco frenzy will do is bring in alot of money for state and federal govenrment to squander. But isn't that what socialism is all about,Government knows best give em all your money and you get an allowance....
