NIE: Al Qaeda To Use Iraq As Base For Attack Against US

This is coming from a National Intelligence Estimate.  A document the left found immensely important for it’s pre-9/11 warnings and post-invasion analysis of the situation in Iraq.  My point being that the left shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss intelligence from a report they’ve previously championed

WASHINGTON - The terrorist network Al-Qaida will likely leverage its contacts and capabilities in Iraq to mount an attack on U.S. soil, according to a new National Intelligence Estimate on threats to the United States

The declassified key findings, to be released publicly on Tuesday, were obtained in advance by The Associated Press

The report lays out a range of dangers - from al-Qaida to Lebanese Hezbollah to non-Muslim radical groups - that pose a “persistent and evolving threat” to the country over the next three years. As expected, however, the findings focus most of their attention on the gravest terror problem: Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida network

The report makes clear that al-Qaida in Iraq, which has not yet posed a direct threat to U.S. soil, could become a problem here

“Of note,” the analysts said, “we assess that al-Qaida will probably seek to leverage the contacts and capabilities of al-Qaida in Iraq (AQI), its most visible and capable affiliate and the only one known to have expressed a desire to attack the homeland.”

The left’s reaction to this will probably be “We’ve done such a horrible job of securing Iraq that terrorists are now going to use the country for attacks against the west.” Something that has actually already happened given that the recent car bombing plots in Great Britain originated with al Qaeda in Iraq

But while al Qaeda being a threat from Iraq isn’t exactly an endorsement of the job we’ve done in securing the country, it does put lie to the left’s “we need to pull out of Iraq to fight the real war on terror” argument.  Because al Qaeda is in Iraq and plotting attacks from there against the west

Iraq is the real war on terror, and leaving Iraq means disengaging from it

Clearly neo-conservatives have the better track record. Every single thing that the neo-conservative camp has said about Iraq, WMDs, Al-Qaeda, and global terrorism has turned out to be truthful and accurate. Does anyone have any doubt that what neo-conservatives truly care about is all of our well-being?

Posted by bigdogbluesky on Jul 17 2007 12:10PM - You idiiot. Don't you know that when we leave Iraq the first thing the Iraqi nationalists will do is to kill all those Al Queda fanatics. Don't you read the reports?

Also, Al Queda wasn't in Iraq until people like you suggested we indvade. If you and the rest of your ilk were so wrong as to get us involved in a war which only created an enemy that didn't previously exist - Al Queda in Iraq, which are different people, a different group from Osama and the Al Queda that attacked us, a group that we created, these new anti-Americans, with our shock and awe and thrist for oil - if you were so wrong as to recommend the horrible fiasco for our country that is the invasion and occupation of Iraq in the first place, than what legitmacy do you have now to suggest we stay to further compound the error. With your disasterous track record of past ill informed advice, who in their right mind would listen to your kind now?

Let the Iraqis deal with the terrorists and rebuild or destroy thier country on their own. All the analysts say that we have created the terrorists that exist there now. Once we are gone they may be able to work things out for themselves. If we stay, the problem will only continue to get worse.

And that means no Korea plan 50 year bases in the desert, and no forcing oil concessions on the poor xxx either. Bring the troops home, cut the military, create more teachers and health care workers, and try to help the Russians control their loose nukes - screw Isreal and the oild companies and Halliburton and the military, congressional, industrial complex.

And yes, they will attack us again. Thanks to you guys that is guranteed. Perhaps a million Iraqis dead since 2002, plus another 500,000 due to the sanctions. You guys created a heck of a lot of angry sons and fathers there, and no doubt inspired countless more to join the Jihad as well. Good going!

Just how do you guys get off even getting printed any longer after all you have done?
