At a campaign stop in Iowa today, Mitt Romney defended the fact that his five sons have not enlisted in the military by saying they are serving the country by "helping me get elected."

"The good news is that we have a volunteer Army and that's the way we're going to keep it," Romney told some 200 people gathered in an abbey near the Mississippi River that had been converted into a hotel. "My sons are all adults and they've made decisions about their careers and they've chosen not to serve in the military and active duty and I respect their decision in that regard."

He added: "One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I'd be a great president."

Romney's five sons, ages 26-37, have worked in the past as real estate developers, sports marketers and advertising executives. All five are now active with their father's campaign. Son Josh, 36, just completed a tour of Iowa in a recreational vehicle. Romney said about the tour:

"I respect that and respect all those and the way they serve this great country."

Posted by Paul on Aug 9 2007 12:55PM - So touring Iowa and New Hampshire in an air-conditioned motorhome is equivalent to touring Iraq in a Humvee where temperatures regularly reach over 100 degrees at night. I find Romney's answer insulting to my brother the marine and my sister who served in the army and every other person who has had to make real sacrifices for the war. For the record, I am probably more conservative than any of the candidates except for perhaps Tancredo.

Posted by ronald heringhauser on Aug 9 2007 8:51PM - If Romney's sons cared about this country they would tell their dad to drop out and all support Ron Paul. He will get elected by a landslide. While Romney can go an spread the morman religon as a missionary in Bagdad, or Kabul.

Posted by ronald heringhauser on Aug 10 2007 9:11AM - These republican and democrat millionaire CFR candidates have no clue about the average American. I mean Clinton, Edwards, Biden, et al, and most Rep. Ron Paul2008 check him out. He is genuine! Dr. Paul is America's last, best hope.

Posted by Arturo Reyes on Aug 17 2007 3:22AM - I am a Marine Corps vet. I was appalled by Gov. Romney's comments about why his son's aren't serving in Iraq instead are working on his campaign. To me his sons are cowards and so is he. Case closed. Hypocrites too!!!

Posted by Keith on Aug 18 2007 5:32PM - Agreed Arturo..I've emailed Gov Romney many times to tell him that his message is hypocritical and that the American people aren't buying it. He should drop out and suport Dr Ron Paul and do what's best for the country instead of feed his own selfish interests!
PERIOD
