Tuesday night's MLB summaries

AMERICAN LEAGUE White Sox 7 Twins 1 CHICAGO (AP) Gavin Floyd came within two outs of throwing the first no-hitter of the 2008 baseball season.

Joe Mauer doubled with one out off Chicago's young right-hander for the Minnesota Twins' only hit. Floyd had to settle for a 7-1 victory as the White Sox ended a six-game losing streak.

Floyd is 3-and-1. Floyd was taken out to a standing ovation after Mauer's double to left-center and Bobby Jenks came on to get the final two outs.

Floyd held Detroit hitless for 7 1-3 innings on April 12th before Edgar Renteria singled. This time he walked three and struck out four. The only run the Twins could muster was aided by an error on Chicago left fielder Carlos Quentin in the fourth inning.

Jermaine Dye his his fourth homer and drove in two for the White Sox.

Red Sox 5 Tigers 0 DETROIT (AP) Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield only allowed two hits in eight shutout innings in the Boston Red Sox' 5-0 win over the Detroit Tigers. David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez also hit back-to-back homers on successive pitches in Boston's fifth straight win and seventh in their last eight.

Detroit was shut out for the fourth time this season. The Tigers have lost five straight.

The only hits Wakefield allowed were Carlos Guillen's two-out single in the first and Ivan Rodriguez's double with two out in the eighth. Wakefield is 3-and-1. Mike Timlin pitched the ninth to finish the three-hitter.

Tigers' starter Nate Robertson fell to 1-and-4 with the loss. He allowed four runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Rays 5 Blue Jays 4 TORONTO (AP) Andy Sonnanstine won his fourth straight start, Eric Hinske homered and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Blue Jays 5-4.

That ends Toronto's five-game winning streak.

Sonnanstine is 5-and-1. He allowed four runs and 10 hits in six innings. It's the earliest that any Tampa Bay pitcher has won five games.

Sonnanstine is 4-and-0 against American League East opponents and has not lost since April 9th against Seattle. He has a 2.45 ERA in his past four starts.

Dan Wheeler worked the seventh and eighth while Troy Percival pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Angels 5 Royals 3 Kansas CITY, Mo. (AP) Garret Anderson homered for the second straight game and drove in all five Los Angeles runs in the Angels' 5-3 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Anderson hit a three-run shot that tied the score 3-all in the fourth. In the fifth, Anderson's RBI single made it 4-3. Then he victimized losing pitcher Brian Bannister with another RBI single in the seventh. He was 3-for-5.

Bannister is 3-and-4 with the loss. The Angels rapped out 15 hits.

Indians 5 Yankees 3 NEW YORK (AP) Pinch-hitter David Dellucci stunned the New York Yankees with a go-ahead homer off Joba Chamberlain and the Cleveland Indians rallied for a 5-3 victory in the opener of a three-game series.

Dellucci's three-run shot with two outs in the eighth inning spoiled a strong start by Andy Pettitte.

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer off Pettitte, but the Yankees built a 3-2 lead against Fausto Carmona on two RBIs from Jason Giambi and a go-ahead single by Robinson Cano (kah-NOH').

Chamberlain is 1-and-2 with the loss.

Rafael Perez tossed two scoreless innings for the win. He's 1-and-1. Jensen Lewis worked a one-hit eighth and Rafael Betancourt got three quick outs for his third save.

Athletics 4 Orioles 2 OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Justin Duchscherer (DOOK'-shur) is showing he's healthy again.

Duchscherer won his second straight start in his third outing since coming off the disabled list and the Oakland Athletics beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 for their third straight victory. The Orioles have lost four straight, their longest slide of the season.

The Orioles are 0-and-7 when they get less than five hits.

Duchscherer and two relievers combined on a four-hitter.

Emil Brown gave the A's a quick lead with a run-scoring single in the first. Bobby Crosby and Mark Ellis each drove in runs on groundouts in the third. Rajai Davis added a sacrifice fly for an insurance run in the sixth and Frank Thomas had two singles and scored twice.

Rangers 10 Mariners 1 SEATTLE (AP) Josh Hamilton, Michael Young and David Murphy drove in three runs each to support Sidney Ponson in the Texas Rangers' 10-1 victory over the sinking Seattle Mariners. Hamilton leads the majors with 36 RBIs.

Seattle lost for the sixth time in seven games to move back into a last-place tie in the AL West. Mariners hitters continued their mostly punchless season with just seven harmless hits in seven innings off Ponson, who is 2-and-0.

The Rangers scored 10 runs in three innings on just six hits and seven walks. Seattle starter Miguel Batista fell to 2-and-4.

Seattle pitchers walked 10.

The game drew the smallest crowd in Safeco Field history 15,818.

NATIONAL LEAGUE Cubs 3 Reds 0 CINCINNATI (AP) Carlos Zambrano gave up only three hits in eight innings and Ronny Cedeno singled home a pair of runs that sent the Chicago Cubs to a 3-0 victory over Cincinnati. The Cubs won for only fourth time in 12 games. Zambrano is 5-and-1 after winning his fourth straight decision.

Zambrano gave up three singles and three walks, struck out three and lowered his earned run average to 1.80. Kerry Wood, pitching on the 10-year anniversary of his 20-strikeout game, gave up a bunt single and struck out two in the ninth for his fifth save in eight chances.

The Reds were shut out for the third time this season. They've lost six of their last seven overall. Reds starter Aaron Harang fell to 1-and-5.

Marlins 3 Brewers 0 MIAMI (AP) Scott Olsen allowed two hits in 8 2-3 innings and Mike Jacobs hit a two-run homer to help the Florida Marlins blank Milwaukee 3-0. Kevin Gregg finished the two-hitter. He needed only one pitch to retire Bill Hall on a flyout for his sixth save in seven chances.

Ryan Braun doubled in the fourth and Prince Fielder singled with two outs in the ninth for Milwaukee's only hits.

The Brewers lost their fourth game in a row, their longest losing streak this season. They've totaled six runs in four games against Florida this season. Olsen has pitched 16 scoreless innings against them. He's 4-and-1 overall.

Jeff Suppan is 1-and-2 with the loss.

Pirates 12 Giants 6 PITTSBURGH (AP) Nate McLouth homered twice and drove in three runs and Zach Duke won for the first time in nearly a year as the Pirates beat the San Francisco Giants 12-6. It's Duke's first win since June 12th.

Duke is 1-and-2. He was winless in six starts this season.

McLouth, a part-time outfielder until this season, had three hits to jump his average to .333. Xavier Nady added a two-run double and now has 32 RBIs.

Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez is 2-and-2 with the loss.

Braves 5 Padres 3 ATLANTA (AP) Jair Jurrjens (JAH'-ree JUR'-jehnz) pitched six strong innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 on Tuesday night to improve the NL's best home record to 12-and-4.

Chipper Jones hit his 10th homer. Mark Kotsay added two hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs.

Kotsay also delivered the defensive play of the game in the fifth inning, making an over-the-shoulder catch at the warning track of Tadahito Iguchi's drive.

Jurrjens is 4-and-2. He matched his career high with eight strikeouts and gave up seven hits with a walk and one run in six innings.

San Diego's Chris Young threw 98 pitches in only five innings, giving up nine hits and five runs. He's 2-and-3.

Astros 6 Nationals 5 HOUSTON (AP) Carlos Lee had the go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning and Lance Berkman had a career-high five hits to lead the Houston Astros to a 6-5 win over the Washington Nationals.

Miguel Tejada (teh-HAH'-dah) and Berkman both singled in the eighth before Lee's hit to right field. Austin Kearns dove for the ball, but it bounced just in front of him. Berkman's five hits ties a franchise record for a nine-inning game. He has nine hits in the last two games.

The win was the Astros' fourth straight and gave them a winning record for the first time since April 22nd.

Doug Brocail got the win to go to 2-and-0. Jose Valverde pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Luis Ayala allowed three hits and two runs in the eighth inning for the loss. He's 1-and-2.

Cardinals 6 Rockies 5 DENVER (AP) Braden Looper pitched into the ninth inning in the longest outing of his career and went 2-for-3 with an RBI in leading the St. Louis Cardinals to 6-5 win over Colorado. The Rockies have lost 13 of 16.

Rick Ankiel (an-KEEL') hit his sixth homer of the season. Ryan Ludwick finished 4-for-4 with two doubles as the Cardinals won for the eighth time in 10 games.

Looper is 5-and-1. Ryan Franklin picked up his first save of the season, but it didn't come easy. After striking out Brad Hawpe, Franklin gave up a two-run double to Chris Iannetta and a run-scoring double to Clint Barmes (BAR-mihs) before getting Jeff Baker to fly out to center.

Albert Pujols POO'-hohlz) extended his streak of reaching base with either a hit, walk or hit by pitch to 34 straight games after going 1-for-5 with a double.

Diamondbacks 6 Phillies 4 PHOENIX (AP) Make it 286 career wins for the Big Unit. Stephen Drew's three-run homer helped Randy Johnson earn Number-286 as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 in a matchup of NL division leaders.

Drew's homer capped a five-run outburst against Adam Eaton in the fourth inning. Eaton is 0-and-1.

Johnson is 2-and-1. He went six innings, matching his longest outing, and allowed four runs on six hits and struck out six. He also gave up two homers, walked two and hit a batter.

The Big Unit gave up a total of five earned runs in his first three starts after returning from back surgery. In his last two outings, Johnson has allowed 10.

Brandon Lyon pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 12 chances for Arizona.

Dodgers 5 Mets 4 LOS ANGELES (AP) Just 24 hours after hitting his first major league home run, Blake DeWitt got his first inside-the park homer that helped the Los Angeles Dodgers score a 5-4 victory over the New York Mets. Blake's homer was a two-run shot off the top of the right-field fence that Mets right fielder Ryan Church got a glove on but couldn't hold.

DeWitt also had a two-run single among his three hits. The Dodgers won for the 10th time in 11 games. His inside-the-park homer was the first by the Dodgers since 2003 when Dave Roberts hit one.

Kong-Chih Kuo (kwoh) got the victory with 3 2-3 innings of hitless relief. The Taiwanese-born left-hander os 2-and-1. He struck out eight of the 13 batters he faced.

Jonathan Broxton pitched a scoreless eighth. Takashi Saito (tah-KAH'-shee SY'-toh) got three outs in the ninth for his fourth save after giving up a pair of two-out singles.
