PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Phillies and Brewers are preparing to open baseball's postseason this afternoon in Philadelphia with Game One of their best-of-five National League Division Series. The Phillies won the season series with Milwaukee 5-1.

ST. LOUIS (AP) Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter will not have surgery for a nerve problem in his shoulder, hoping he'll be ready for spring training after therapy and rest. The 33-year-old right-hander pitched 15 and a-third innings last season after returning from reconstructive elbow surgery in July, going 0-1 with a 1.76 ERA.

HOUSTON (AP) A prosecutor has dropped a marijuana possession charge against Jameel Cook, saying there's insufficient evidence to show the ex-Houston Texans fullback knew there was marijuana in his car when he was pulled over by a patrol officer in August. But Cook still faces misdemeanor counts of driving with an invalid license, failure to maintain insurance, no front license plate, expired registration and expired inspection sticker. Cook was released by the Texans six days after he was arrested.

TOKYO (AP) Defending champion David Ferrer beat Jesse Levine of the United States 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 today at the Japan Open.

American Andy Roddick joined the Spaniard in the third round by defeating Ivo Minar (EE'-voh mih-NAHR') 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.

NEW YORK (AP) World record-holder Paula Radcliffe says she'll be on hand to defend her title at the New York City Marathon on November 2nd. The 34-year-old from Great Britain won the prestigious race last year for the third time, just 10 months after the birth of her daughter.
