Obama Using Dead Soldier’s Bracelett As A Stage Prop

This sort of political theater is just plain irritating

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - Barack Obama is wearing a wristband in memory of a soldier killed in Iraq, given to him by a mother who said she wants the Democratic presidential candidate to keep others from dying

Tracy Jopek of Merrill, Wis., gave Obama the bracelet at a rally Friday night in Green Bay, and Obama was still wearing it Saturday as he campaigned across the state before Tuesday’s primary

The bracelet has her son’s name, Sgt. Ryan David Jopek, and the date the 20-year-old was killed in Iraq by a roadside bomb, Aug. 2, 2006. “All gave some — He gave all,” it says

“She gave me this wristband, which I’m very grateful for,” Obama told the Green Bay audience, halting and lowering his voice from his normally upbeat presentation. “I meet mothers and family members all over the country who are still mourning their children but are also thinking about the young men and women who are still over there and wondering when it will end.”

First, while I don’t know anything about Sgt. Jopek personally, it irks me that his name is being used for political purposes.  Did he oppose the war?  Would he want his mother using his name, military service and sacrifice as a campaign gimmick for Barack Obama?  We don’t know

Second, I hate it when our soldiers are portrayed as a bunch of confused children who somehow ended up in Iraq against their wishes.  Let’s remember that these are strong, intelligent men and women we’re talking about.  And that they volunteered for the service they’re performing in the middle east, most of them having made their commitments to service with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan having already started.  Meaning that they knew full well what they were getting themselves into, and joined up anyway

I’ll not pretend to speak for the troops.  I’m sure their political views on the war, and everything else under the sun, are as varied as the locations and backgrounds they come from.  Which means that Barack Obama shouldn’t presume to speak for them either, or cast them as confused and needy victims which they most assuredly are not

Its a question of your political views, this woman has every right to protest the war if she wants to. Its not anti-military its anti Iraq and the sooner people realize that the sooner our nation can heal itself. BTW Obama wants to expand the military by 100,000 soldiers and he will give them the equipment they need to fight the wars of this new century. He also strongly believes we should go after al-qaeda but the war in Iraq was a huge mistake and that Iraq was not responsible for 911.

Posted by considerate on Feb 17 2008 2:13AM - do you think they'd mind what their mother did?
Obama is the only canidate running on a complete against the War platform. He didn't vote for the war[s]; what part of a loving mother using her child's memory is wrong with that? Anything is better than the president standing in from of Soldiers, screaming for war. his mother asked Obama to speak for her child. can't you search for a better reason to be disgusted with a canidate. we have more than one who wants to have more children honoured by dying. look at them with your your shorten eyes and mouth.

Posted by KEVIN on Feb 17 2008 2:54PM - Obama didn't vote for the war as Hillary and McCain did. Now Hillary is pretending that she didn't really think her vote would end up causing the war that has killed more than 4,000 of our troops (with thousands more terribly injured). That's a lie. At least Obama is honest in being against this war. Hillary, voted for it, AND just recently, voted to authorize bush to attack Iran.

And, after voting for these wars....Where's HER daughter? Fighting in IRAQ? No!

The Clintons, like the Neocons, thinks it's great to be for wars, as long as OTHER parents' children die in them.

I say: GO OBAMA!

Posted by George in Merrill on Feb 17 2008 9:56PM - I knew this kid. He played basketball with my son. Just before he went to Iraq he sat in my living room and talked about how he wanted to join the Park service as a ranger when he was home and finished school. A great kid. Why does anyone feel its o.k. to second guess his mom. If she wanted Barak to wear the bracelet thats good enough for me.

Posted by Helen from Merrill on Feb 19 2008 9:51PM - Ditto to what George said...Ryan's Mom lives a block from me..my son, Alex is active duty Army..he is going to deploy to Iraq in November. If Alex doesn't make it, I will be on the same page as Ryan's mom.

I don't care if you don't like it that Obama wears that bracelet, but if Tracy wants it worn then you should mind your own business.
