Mike - Forget Jack A who is a Littl RushNut in training. Apart from the medicine show that we will be having in the Dome this Friday, I do have a small issue to comment on. Downtown Fargo is becoming a place for pedestrians and bikers to shop and spend time. For a food or retail business it definitely has potential. Downtown Broadway has a problem with dog owners who are not picking up their dog's feces on the sidewalk. This AM a pile of it was walked on and spread on up the walk. There are just too many people downtown on the weekdays for this to occur. Reply...
This may not make sense, but my Bible breaks down Matthew 5:17-19 this way: In the OT there were 3 categories of law...ceremonial for worship, which pointed forward to Jesus...these were no longer necessary after Jesus' death and resurrection. Even Jesus was accused by the Pharisees of breaking these laws. Next were the civil laws applied to daily living. Jesus demonstrated these principles by example. Last was the moral law, such as the Ten Commandments. These are the direct command of God and still apply to us today. The moral law reveals the nature and will of God. Jesus obeyed moral law completely. Jesus tried to bring people back to what God had intended and tried to straighten out what the religious leaders had turned into a confused mass of rules. Jesus did not speak against the law itself, but against the abuses and excesses to which it had been subjected. Jesus was giving a fuller understanding of why God made the law in the first place. Jesus came to accomplish the laws purpose. Reply...
I have not now nor at any time claimed to be an expert in Biblical interpretation...matter of fact, it could probably be debated whether or not anyone truly understands all of God's word without error. However, when an obvious misinterpretation in my opinion occurs, I always relate what I think...and always end it with "just my take"...meaning this is how I understand it. Now, to address the "harsh" Mosaic laws, without understanding the idea of what God was trying to accomplish with the Israelites during their 40 year sojourn in the desert, one would think the laws appear to be regimented and almost random. I believe God was trying to instill faith and discipline back into a people that had not openly practiced their faith in over 400 years. Just my take... Reply...
ND......That is what I think!!!! To me, this is the most problematic passage in the bible when it comes to reconciling the old and new testament:
Matthew 5: 17
17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Reply...
A lot of people would say that different conditions don't change the laws. Either they apply in these times or they don't, but try to keep your opinion consistent with all of the scriptural laws simultaneously if you claim that the bible is a whole document and needs to be taken as a whole. You can't tell others you object to them taking biblical scripture out of context if you're willing to do the same thing yourself to explain away conflicts in scripture. Reply...
What did Jesus say about scripture and the law...that is where I would start if I wanted to get a foundation. Also, what conditions were present when God gave the law to the children of Israel...things to think about. Reply...
I was under the impression that there was a voucher system in place for people who wanted to send their children to private school. They're issued by the government so that you can get the tax money you pay redirected to a private school. If that is where you have your children educated, you should suit yourself with what they offer, and nothing extra. Otherwise you're taking advantage of both systems and running one of them down. You know, a lot of public schools in the 60's shut down when they started issuing school vouchers so that parents wouldn't have a racially integrated society influencing their children's view of the world. Some people jokingly referred to the private schools they sent their children to as "segregation academies". Reply...
The video is ernie's first post on this thread.
My interest in this thread isn't so much with Obama......but I'm using his comments as a touchstone to talk about the OT and its relationship to Christianity.
I brought up Blmccar because we have been down this road before. Blmccar would bring up Paul's words as the (for lack of a better term) the Christian transcendence of the laws of Moses.
Just to catch you up, I have a bit of trouble with Paul as his message relates to the Sermon on the Mount.
Anyway, I'm not trying to play tricks, I'm interested in the reconciliation of Paul with Christ with the old law. So far, though valiant and beautiful attempts have been made by religious folks on this website, I still haven't heard a satisfactory explanation.
Ironically, this video addresses the (sometimes) brutal (to me, at least) nature of the Laws of Moses and the Sermon on the Mount. Reply...
2 different issues seem to be at play here. Earlier you questioned the OT for saying "parents are told to stone their children". That would be taking Deut 21 completely out of context...we can certainly discuss this if you like. Now, the second issue with Obama claiming this is not a passage to refer to in governing...who said that it was? I didn't watch the video or interview, so I cannot form an opinion at this point. Are you saying the candidates where asked to select scripture that should not be used to govern by...that seems like a very strange question. I'll have to check out the interview...thanks. Reply...
Okay.....here is a "skeptics" webpage. I will let you double-check with your own Good Book.
http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/says_about/stoning.html
If there be found among you ... that ... hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them ... Then shalt thou ... tone them with stones, till they die. Deuteronomy 17:2-5
If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers ... thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die. Deuteronomy 13:5-10
- - -
Please correct me if I am wrong, but this seems to say that if I try to persuade my Mother to follow another religion (or maybe even quit Christianity), that I should be stoned....till I die.
Can we use this passage to guide public policy? Or do we agree with Obama that it probably shouldn't be used. Reply...
Unfortunately my reference is Ernie's video of Obama above.....hold on, let me do a search...........................................

Nice try Ernie.
Here is what I wrote:
Is it one you agree with?.....that not all of the Laws of Moses have to be obeyed?....that, for example, stoning a child for straying from the faith, is not a godly thing for a 2008 human to do?
- - -
You didn't answer the question. You just posted biblical references that may or may not fall into the category of "cherry-picking" from the bible...... which is the subject now on the table.
What needs to be established is, for now, if the Old Testament is applicable to public policy? And if so, what parts of it? Some, none or all?
Obama picked two parts of the Old Testament and seemingly holds them up as examples of what we cannot use. I'm asking if you agree with OBAMA that "stoning children for straying from the faith" is not something we should do....even though its in the Bible?
After we discuss the Old Testament, we can move to the New Testament. But it appears you will be travelling.
Perhaps someone else can take up argument and DISCUSS the issue with me instead of just reciting scripture.
Enjoy your travels. Reply...
Wuwe, if you don’t like answers having "biblical references" may I suggest you stop posting in the Faith & Religion forum. My last post proved Obama is biblically illiterate. Our government shouldn’t be using the sermon on the mound for military policy for the same reason they shouldn’t be building an Ark. Well, I’m off to Arkansas to go hunting.
