Well Shoppe. To answer your question, we have to answer what is the NEW COVENANT?
I would argue it is the same covenant given to the Jews, but this one is now written on your heart. Reply...

What a great question WW... I would love to discuss if The New Covenant is being followed by us Christians. I hate to say it, but my answer would be that most of us Christians are not living THE NORMAL CHRISTIAN LIFE (also the name of a book by Watchman Nee).......good for discussion.
Now, back to Paul...I believe all that was written of Paul, I just do, its a faith thing I guess..:)
NDfinfan, I believe Paul had a face to face with Jesus, and was immediately changed...
NOw, my husband didn't have a "face to face" , but when he called out to Jesus one afternoon on the side of the road in Delevan Wisconsin, 1973, he also was IMMEDIATELY changed, no turning back... also no face to face. He had drank socially, but sometimes too much, he had smoked more than 2 packs a day for years, he never gave God a second thought. But one day, after that roadside experience he NEVER WANTED ANOTHER CIG OR DRINK , NEVER..... It was amazing... No one could believe it... And we started going to church the next Sunday, and never looked back.... Reply...
Luke!! I am so glad to see you back... where have you been? www.australianchristian.com I am guessing.. :)
I am also against abortion of course, but I will always leave that open for only a very young rape victim (if of course she chooses it)..there was a recent rape victim that was 10 and had a healthy child, so it happens, but I still say if it(any abortion ) happens it is still murder.
Rapist need to be immediately castrated.... without anesthesia..
HOw is australia? Are you praying for America since we have turned socialistic?
I cannot understand, well, maybe I can understand, since I as you have know the ending of "the Book".
Greetings... Reply...
ND.
As you understand me, I, too, understand you.
When it comes to miracles/revelations, there is another aspect that hasn't been discussed in much details. The modern world's (I don't intend any superiority by this term) mind may not be conditioned to receive such visions.
It is not a position I hold; however, it must be accepted as a possibility.
- - -
When it comes to Christianity in 2008, there are chasms that need crossed:
- That a human being was THE son of god.
- That what was written about him is true
- That by following his example, as written, his followers could be saved.
- That Paul did talk to God.
- That Paul's interpretation of his conversation(s) were accurate and did, indeed, constitute a New Convenant.
- That the translation from Godspeak to Greek/Aramaic/whatever is accurate and that this translation then into English is accurate. (It is difficult enough trying to get the "best" translation of the Tao Te Ching.......and you can find 10 different interpretations of the Koran's view on the role of women).
- That this New Convenant is being practiced accurately today amongst the faithful (i.e. Those who are willfully trying to follow the righteous path).
This list is by no means complete. But this leap of faith is actually many leaps. And after observing the many leaps of faith needed to arrive some of the truths expoused by the church, I think you will admit that there is reason for non-believers in holding that your conclusions may be "a bridge too far." Sorry it took so long to get back with you WU...kinda hectic weekend! Anyway, I understand your view and respect your feelings. However, I have a very difficult time believing that a man as rooted in his beliefs as Saul was, would have had a complete change of heart overnight without divine intervention. We are talking about a man who persecuted and killed Christians. He was on his way to Damascus to do the same thing when he "experienced" Jesus. This intervention or change if you will, had a profound effect on his life that cannot be overstated. Paul went on to become the strongest proponent for Jesus in the gentile world. Paul's faith in Christ caused him to suffer persecution everywhere he went and eventually cost him his life. Very few sane men demonstrate that type of faith and commitment without incredibly strong faith and belief. A similiar picture can be painted of the disciples' actions after Jesus's cruxificion. They were terrified and in hiding...then a few days later there were on the streets of Jerusalem preaching the message of Christ without care or concern for their own well-being...how do you explain the overnight change? If these examples were few and far between, maybe you would have an arguement, but this was happening in the 1st century church on a massive scale. Just my take... Reply...
"If I die as a believer and there really is not a God, so what.... If an unbeliever dies , and then it turns out he was wrong, that there is a God.... thats different."
No offense intended, but that is a cop-out.
Faith is faith, not "what-if"; "what-if" undermines the whole concept of faith.
I've no such illusions; there is a God - He's not a "maybe".

Very interesting. I've come late to this post, but, in reference to the OP's query, here goes: I believe in the Maker of All Things, God. God was very vengeful (see Sodom and Gomorrah). Humankind, His creation, did not comply, so it was destroyed (Noah), then renewed, and a Covenant was made with humankind that such an act wouldn't occur again (Abraham). He continued to test his prophets (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob), but blessed them with abundance. And then there was Moses (through Joseph), who led God's people to the Promised Land (which would be Israel, where they settled, long before Mohammed's claim to the land circa 700-800 AD). In time, humankind slacked off again, so to speak. On the verge of being destroyed, we were spared: God remembered His covenant with Abraham and devised a way to continue the existence of His children: Send an ambassador, if you will, to Earth to proclaim His message. To do so, he needed an exemplary person to bear a child; he found one in Mary, and she bore God's child, delivering Him to the world, naming Him Jesus. Jesus was unheard of for several years after His miraculous conception/birth. Besides the slaughter Herod inflicted, His early years are mostly undocumented. When Jesus neared his 30's, the local community became transformed. People with incurable diseases were cured by His touch. Many were fed from a seemingly inefficient amount of food. Some Jews became convinced that Jesus was the Savior prophesied by their religion; some even became disciples. These events led to accusations of Jesus being a heretic, both from Jews, who weren't ready to believe that the Savior/Messiah had arrived, and from the Roman occupying Jerusalem at the time, who preferred to believe that Caesar (whomever was occupying the post at the time - they believed, sort of (it was a political issue), that all Emperors were derived from Julius Caesar) was the divine interpretation of God. Jesus chose to sacrifice Himself, to offer Himself up to God (a very angry God, remember) as a replacement for all of the sinners (see above). Jesus allowed Himself to be sacrificed to the crowd; a thief on the cross next to Him recognized His divinity, and the huge mistake humanity was making, and he was rewarded. Jesus's friends, the disciples, were variously scattered, but one, St. Peter, went on to found the Catholic Church. Peter was also the first Pope of the Catholic Church. Protestantism was founded on dissent toward the crusades (how'd Muslim occupation work out for you, Spain?) and a British king's desire for divorce (Anglicanism). Both are relevant beliefs, but I am convinced that the latter religions were founded on politics, not beliefs. And that is why I am proudly a Catholic. Reply...

Ok I say Paul was hallucinating, and all that religious experience is all a dream. Ok now maybe God's plan was for him to fall off the horse in the desert and hallucinate. Now would you consider that a religious experience? I am on the fence about that, me my fiancee where talking about it and couldn't decide if that constituted a personal interaction or not. Reply...

ND. My response was put more elegantly by yourself. My intentions were to say that though Shoppe's logic seems sound, it is not the reason one would be a believer.........and by "one", I mean myself.
I would not become a believer in Christ because it was a death insurance policy. Reply...
