You're kidding, right?
This part of your "story", is in NO WAY correct: "Also at the Legislature today, The Senate voted 25-17 in favor of ending the use of the Fighting Sioux as UND's nickname."
This was NOT the North Dakota Senate. It was the University Senate at the University of North Dakota. HUGE difference.
There were also 14 members of the University Senate that abstained, including President Kelley of UND. Way to take a stand!
This resolution was introduced, anonymously, by the way, in order to fend off the backlash that Fighting Sioux nickname opponents are going to receive when the Spirit Lake Nation votes on the issue at a referendum later this month. The vote will most likely pass, and nickname opponents are petrified of that fact. It will expose their position on the issue for what it really is. NOTHING!
Is there someone there that researches items before they are posted as "news"? Reply...
Maj. Gen. David Spryncznatyk is quite oblivious to the beliefs of the troops under his command. There are, in fact, atheists in foxholes, and serving with honor in our armed forces. In fact, they have an organization that serves to promote their right to non-belief and freedom from discrimination and abuse by those who do believe. Learn more at http://www.maaf.info/

As a disabled veteran, one issue that I would like to bring up is veterans preference for government jobs.
I have applied for government jobs and was told every line you could imagine (Farm Service Agency: We are exempt from veterans preference) (A county courthouse office position: you live outside the county) and other stupid excuses.
The veteran preference laws in this country are weak or just ignored. The position that we apply for we also have to be qualified for (ie. CDL for truck driver, etc.), so we apply for entry level gov't jobs (clerk, laborer, etc.) to get our foot in the door and obtain training. There are even some entry level postions (PMR, etc.) in the Post Office that are vet preference "exempt".
We are not looking for a handout. Some veterans served in the military and forgave the opportunity to go to college. Some overseas missions do not allow you to take schooling overseas, etc. even if you tried for an education while on active duty.
All I am asking is that when entry level gov't positions are being filled, allow and encourage veterans to apply for them (post office, etc.). The laws, particularly at the federal level, need to be enforced for vet preference hiring.
Some partial disabled vets, (myself included) are trying to work around our military inflicted physical difficulties and want to work. I know I can possibly put in for a 100% disability rating, but I would rather work. I apply for office positions, which I am physically able to do and have a computer degree and get the run around because someones relative was "ordained" to get the position.
Veterans sacrifice alot of their life (and health) to serve in the military and we get a runaround trying to apply for entry level jobs in government.
I am tired of government agencies trying everything possible to get around veterans preference hiring laws.

Eric, Thanks for the post you put up. Here is a post on Fallen Heros Memorial about my brother...My brother was a prtty awesome guy..http://www.fallenheroesmemorial.com/oif/profiles/hendricksonkennethw.html
With the 5 year anniversary of his death this month, it is heard to believe that it has been that long...Still seems like it was just a short time ago. ANd in the last 5 years Ken missed my 4 boys weddings, his sons wedding, 6 of my grandkids being born for him to enjoy. He was married to his sweetheart Reane days b4 going to Iraq. But it all comes down to the fact that all of these brave American heros sacrificed many things to do one thing. Keep our great USofA free. Thanks to our Vets Reply...

More importantly sheilanagig,is that I do understand your poin of veiw. I also believe that those that come home and suffer from things that may have happened in their service should be taken care of. I will do some checking and see what ND can do, or if it lies more with the federal govt. I do know that ND Natl guard does have many options available to them. And thank you for your comments... I alwaysappreciate them. Reply...
I can level with that. I don't know what could make it easier for someone who has lost a loved one to war. I guess if something symbolic means that much to you, it's little enough to ask. I think there's got to be more than that, though. Not all of them die. Some of them come back needing medical treatment for the rest of their lives, or prosthetics, or they aren't able to work. I hope I understand your point of view, but I hated those yellow ribbon stickers made in China, because they didn't do anything for anyone except make them feel good about how "supportive" they were being. The only thing it really supports is the Chinese economy. Reply...
sheilanagig, I do happen to agree with you on that point, but one thing I will bring up. Our loved ones dont need meds or food on the table, because our loved ones gave the ultimate sacrifice. We dont ever get to go see them, they dont get to talk to us about thier experiences, they dont get to see thier son get married.... So I will always appreciate wha everyone has done for our country, and they will always be heros. ANd do you know that many states already have a Gold Star license plate program. We are actually behind in that category, and froma Governor who states all the time how he is for the fallen heros and their families. He should have been promoting this or implemented it long ago. Reply...
I don't care about license plates as much as I do about veterans getting adequate medical and mental health care, or their families being taken care of when they die or are unable to function. Gold stars and medals and yellow ribbons are all very pretty, but they don't buy meds or put food on the table. Reply...
My condolences to you and your family, god bless him.As a wwII vet that lost his best buddy in combat ,I know he thought he was doing the right thing for his country. Reply...
Perry & Teresa are my parents. I am sooooo proud of them for what they do for our country!!! Thank you KXMB for doing this story on them. It doesn't happen very often that 2 members of the same family leave to go overseas at the same time. It will be very tough without them here and they will be missed greatly!! I love you Mom & Dad!!!
Thanks again,

Why are we still sending National Guardsmen to Bush's illegal, immoral, unjustified, and unconstitutional wars of terror in the Middle East? I've been to Iraq twice, and we are doing nothing for the people of Iraq. Our efforts go to line the pockets of those profiting from our occupation of Iraq. Semper Fi and peace...

If you guys new the rest of the story than you would know that they were in Baghdad for fourty days and were then redeployed somewhere else in Iraq. They were there for six or seven months. I work with one of the troops that were there with them. Reply...
I just have a couple of years in service. Let me think, ummm... Right around 18 years (15 active duty Army, and AF), with just a couple of years in Iraq. I guess not really enough to know anything.
Anyway, I'm kind of getting tired of restating that I think that if they deserve the medal, they should receive it. But by putting so much emphasis on a "Service Ribbon," (AF Combat Action Ribbon) they are deminishing the importance of "Meritorious Awards."
The one positive I do see from it, is that if the AF is making a big thing out of awarding the AF Combat Action Ribbon, the must not be giving them out like candy like the Army does with the Combat Action Badge. Reply...
Hey, uh yeah, How many days have you spent serving your country. we should appreciate these guys not be concern about what medal they won or who presented it to them. They are the ones who give you the freedom to talk on these forums. You should be standing behind these guys and thank them for your freedom no matter how long their tours were. Reply...
Come on, the AF Ach. Medal ranks higher in precedence. Reply...
